Concrete Strategies performed the structural concrete and flatwork for this $81-million athletic complex at Saint Louis University’s midtown campus. The 320,000-square-foot multi-purpose arena is home to Billiken men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball, as well as concerts, family shows, trade shows, commencements and other events. The arena is a three-level structural concrete frame that supports eight high roof trusses and the roof over the arena. The levels include an event level, concourse level and suite level within the arena. The foundation system consists of 192-drilled piers, along with tie-beams and grade beams. Eight bastions provide both the shear walls for the concrete frame structure and enclose the four elevator shafts and eight stairwells. The event level is the lowest level, which consists of slab on grade. There were eight separate pours for the event level. Foundation walls are 36’ high and the bastion wall stall and the bastion walls are 80’ high tall. All of these concrete walls were gang formed and concrete was placed with a by pump. Two lattice boom cranes and one rough terrain crane handled all of the hoisting requirements. Both the concourse and suite levels consist of structural pan slabs covering 92,000-square-feet. There were ten pours on the concourse level, and four pours on the suite level.
