Concrete Strategies performed the structural concrete and flatwork for this new 70,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility that provides additional research facilities crucial to the continued development of the university’s strategic plan.

Additional space is included for the Department of Electrical & Systems Engineering, the International Center for Advanced Renewable Energy and Sustainability (I-CARES), and Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering (EECE). Green Hall connects with Brauer Hall on all three levels of its west façade. The two wings of Green Hall are connected by a gate that leads to the intersection of Skinker Boulevard and Forest Park Parkway. The project is a concrete structure featuring a granite and limestone façade to match the Collegiate Gothic style throughout the Washington University campus. The concrete frame is critical in the vibration control required since this is a lab facility. The interior features more than 30 offices/conference rooms, several dry labs, one wet lab, three large classrooms, approximately 40,000-square-feet of shell space for future lab fit-outs, and high-end millwork finishes.

Green Hall has received LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Efforts to accomplish this goal include installation of high-efficiency plumbing fixtures, irrigation provided by captured rainwater, regularly measuring building energy use to maintain peak performance, and incorporating high percentages of recycled-content and locally sourced materials throughout the building. The Clayco team also used wood from sustainable managed forests for more than 50-percent of the building’s wood products and diverted more than 90-percent of construction waste from landfills.
