MODOT Rehab of Overpass

The contract allowed a short window of time for closure of each of the bridges for removal of the existing 20-year-old overlay, deck repairs and application of the new overlay.

This rehabilitation project consisted of seven overpasses at six locations in St. Louis City. The total length of the improvements was 1.4 miles.

The contract allowed a short window of time for closure of each of the bridges for removal of the existing 20-year-old overlay, deck repairs and application of the new overlay. MODOT’s specifications required the use of standard Portland cement concrete (PCC) for bridge deck concrete repairs and latex modified concrete for the wearing surface overlay. Repairs had to be completed in “zones” and the extent of repairs would cause delay in proceeding with the next “zone” waiting for concrete strength. Review of the specification showed a 72 hour wet cure requirement for the latex modified concrete.

Concrete Strategies and Rapid Set Cement worked with MODOT on a redesign using Rapid Set LowP Cement Concrete for both repairs and wearing surface overlay application. Rapid Set LowP Cement Concrete prevented lost time on the project between “zone” repairs and reduced construction schedule.
